Bunded Fuel Tanks FAQs

Do fuel tanks need to be bunded?

Yes, many fuel tanks in the UK are required to be bunded, particularly those over 2,500 litres, or those located near open drains, watercourses, or on commercial, industrial or agricultural properties. Bunding provides secondary containment in case the main tank leaks, helping to prevent environmental contamination.

Is it illegal to have a single-skin oil tank?

It is not outright illegal to use a single-skin tank in the UK, but it is increasingly considered non-compliant in many scenarios. Single-skin tanks can still be used in domestic settings if the capacity is under 2,500 litres and a risk assessment shows there is no significant risk to the environment. However, in most new installations, bunded tanks are recommended—or required—to meet safety and environmental protection standards.

Can a bunded oil tank leak?

A bunded tank can still leak, though it offers better protection than a single-skin tank. If the inner tank develops a fault, the outer bund is designed to contain any spillage. However, if the bund itself is poorly maintained or damaged, it may fail to provide the intended protection. Regular inspections and maintenance are essential to ensure the integrity of both the tank and the bund.

What are the requirements for a fuel bund?

To meet UK regulations, a compliant bund must:

  • Hold at least 110% of the tank’s capacity
  • Be impermeable to oil and water
  • Include containment for all associated pipework and fittings
  • Be free from cracks, leaks, or damage
  • Be kept clear of rainwater, oil, or debris
  • Be regularly inspected and maintained
  • Be capable of containing spills from overfilling, equipment failure, or vandalism

What is the life of a bunded oil tank?

On average, a professionally installed, well maintained oil tank will last between 20-25 years before needing to be replaced. However, lifespan can vary depending on several factors such as tank location, exposure to the elements, corrosion resistance, frequency of servicing and more. Steel oil tanks tend to last longer than plastic oil tanks – we offer DESO plastic tanks that come with a 2-year warranty, while our own custom steel tanks come with a 5-year warranty.

Can I put a roof over my oil tank?

Yes, installing a roof over your oil tank can help prevent theft and will minimise the risk of corrosion and damage from the elements. Just make sure you leave plenty of room for servicing, maintenance and oil deliveries, and that the roofing adheres to OFTEC’s fire-safety guidelines.
