Should I choose a plastic or steel heating oil tank?

Deciding between a plastic or steel heating oil tank comes down to a couple of things. Firstly, plastic tanks are cheaper than steel and are commonly more resistant to extreme weather.

Secondly, steel tanks offer greater security and protection from thieves, thanks to their drill-resistant outer shell. Whether you should choose one or the other depends on your budget, needs and tank location.

Can I install my own heating oil tank?

We recommend choosing our installation service because we guarantee that your heating oil tank is installed by an OFTEC-registered engineer.

Whether you choose us to install your oil tank or not, it must be installed by an OFTEC engineer, or similarly qualified person, to meet our installation requirements. These requirements extend to ensuring the supplied instructions are followed, statutory requirements are met, and maintenance guidelines are observed.

How long do heating oil tanks last?

The best way to ensure heating oil tanks last as long as possible is through regular servicing and maintenance. Replacing or repairing a faulty oil tank is more expensive than investing in the proper maintenance of a heating oil tank.

The material the tank is made from is also an important factor, with our steel tanks coming with a five-year warranty versus plastic tanks that come with two years. However, maintaining and protecting your heating oil tank should make these last much longer.

What size heating oil tank do I need?

Different households and families require different levels of heating oil. Smaller homes, with fewer family members, need much less than a busy household with a vast number of rooms to maintain.

Our expert team has extensive knowledge of heating oil tank installations and is perfectly placed to guide your decision through impartial and honest advice.

What size are home heating oil tanks?

Here at SG Tanks, we provide a wide range of sizes in our home heating oil tanks, whether they are plastic, steel, bunded or single-skin.

Our oil tanks range in size from 650 litres to 10,000 litres, so whatever your needs are, we can meet them. We work with you to find the perfect installation location at your home to ensure that your heating oil tank fits perfectly with your lifestyle.

Can heating oil tanks be inside?

Heating oil tanks may be installed inside, perhaps if you would rather not lose space in your garden, but it must meet British Standards. Those standards require an internal heating oil tank to have a limited capacity of 3,500 litres, provided there is an additional containment device, such as a bunded oil tank.

That’s not all, and an indoor heating oil tank must be stored in a fireproof room of at least one hour’s protection on the lowest possible floor. Furthermore, nothing but the oil tank should be in the room and there must be ventilation to the outside environment.

How close to a boundary can I place an oil storage tank?

Heating oil tanks are commonly placed in gardens or on the exterior of a home, but they come with some safety restrictions. They must be positioned at least 0.76 metres away from non-fire-resistant boundaries, like wooden fences and 0.6 metres from any non-boundary screenings like trees or plants.

Heating oil tanks must also be positioned no less than 1.8 metres from a building, eaves, doorway or window. Thanks to years of experience, our expert installation team will always ensure your oil tank complies with UK installation regulations.

Which type of tank is best?

Which type of heating oil tank is best depends on a variety of factors. Either plastic or steel oil tanks have their own advantages and disadvantages, while bunded tanks commonly provide better protection against spills than single-skin tanks.

However, more protection commonly commands a higher price so budget is another element to consider when choosing a heating oil tank. We are on hand to guide you through the process with our experienced team of installation experts who will find the best tank for your needs.

How long does a tank of heating oil last?

Naturally, the larger the capacity of an oil tank, the longer it will last. However, larger tanks are commonly necessary for larger houses with more people living in them, using the oil more frequently.

The average UK household uses approximately 1,700 to 1,800 litres of heating oil per year. So, depending on how big your tank is, this could be several refills or just one per year. Employing effective oil conservation techniques, such as regular maintenance and insulating your home, should see your tank go further.

What is a bunded heating oil tank?

A bunded heating oil tank offers two layers of protection versus the one that a single skin tank provides. Essentially, a bunded oil tank is a tank within a tank, with the oil contained inside the inner tank and the outer skin acting as protection from the elements.

Bunded oil tanks are commonly more expensive and offer better protection for the environment as they are designed to contain any spills.
